Shirayama Hime Jinja Shrine

Sacred shrine for matchmaking

Hakusan, one of the three most famous mountains in Japan and one of the three sacred mountains of Japan, has long been a mountain coveted by the people of the capital.

Hakusan Hime Shrine is the head shrine of the approximately 3,000 Hakusan shrines in Japan, and is known locally as “Shirayama-san,” the first shrine in Kaga Province.

The sacred deity Shirayama-hime-no-ohkami, also known as Kukuri-hime-no-kami, is revered as the god of marriage.

Hakusan Hime Shrine is located on the border of Ishikawa, Fukui, and Gifu prefectures and worships Mt.

According to shrine legend, a place of distant worship called Matsuri-no-wa was founded in the late 3rd or early 4th century, and the shrine hall and pagoda were built in 716.

The front approach and precincts of the shrine are dominated by towering cedar and asunaro trees over 1,000 years old, creating a solemn atmosphere. Walking along the moss-covered approach to the temple is a soothing experience.

In addition, many cultural assets, including a sword (inscribed Yoshimitsu), a national treasure, are preserved in the Treasure House.

The elegant cypress worship hall stands in the temple, inviting visitors to pass through the torii gate and enter the sacred precincts of the shrine. In winter, the worship hall shines beautifully when covered with snow.

Hakusan Hime Shrine attracts visitors as a spot for matchmaking, protected by sacred trees.
