The Kiriko Festival, a festival that makes Noto’s spirit soar

Kiriko festivals are held throughout the Noto Peninsula and are spectacular festivals in which people parade through the town carrying huge kiriko (paper lanterns) and hoto (votive lanterns) on their backs.

Held as summer and autumn festivals, they are held in about 200 locations. This traditional festival was started to pray for the eradication of epidemics and a good harvest.

Giant kirikos (floats) over 10 meters high and 5 meters high are paraded by the bearers. The powerful sight of these floats is overwhelming to behold and is the festival’s main attraction.

As a seasonal tradition, the festival attracts many visitors and is filled with the energy of the festival.

At the Wajima Chiriko Kaikan, visitors can fully experience the glamorous and energetic atmosphere of the festival. The kirikos displayed inside and outside the building and the images on the screen recreate the fantastic nighttime atmosphere of the kiriko festival. Feel the moment when the spirit of Noto comes alive.

You can always feel the spirit of the festival in the hall and the surrounding event space, where the splendor of the nighttime Chirico Festival is recreated.
