Mitsuke Island

The symbol of Noto, also known as “Gunkanjima” (Battleship Island)

Mitsukejima is a chalk island with a circumference of 400 meters and a height of 28 meters, with large rocks towering over the island as if a warship were coming toward it.

Known as the symbol of Noto, this island is said to have been found by Kukai (Kobo Daishi) when he went there to proselytize, and the name Mitsukejima comes from the meaning “found.

It is also called “Gunkanjima” or “Mitsukeshima” because of its distinctive warship-like shape, and is familiarly known as “Gunkanjima.

During low tide, stepping stones appear and visitors can walk to the island, a thrilling experience that is unforgettable.

The island is home to Mitsuke Shrine and a beautiful natural setting.

There is a marriage bell on the beach, and the island is also known as “Enmusubiuchi,” a sacred place for lovers.

At night, the shrine is illuminated, creating a romantic atmosphere.

Furthermore, the best time to enjoy the beautiful scenery is in the morning when there are few people around and at sunrise.

There used to be a rock called “Kojima” about 10 meters away from Mitsukejima 20 meters away, but it became smaller over the years due to erosion and disappeared in 2019.

However, Mitsukejima itself retains its character and continues to be loved by many people.

Located in the Noto Peninsula National Park, the area around Mitsukejima has been developed as a park, with a promenade, swimming beaches, and campgrounds that attract many visitors.

Near Mitsukejima, there is a restaurant called “Mitsuke Jaya,” which offers a coffee shop with a view of Mitsukejima and the ocean, as well as souvenirs and local products.

Enjoy the sight of the powerful warship and the magnificent nature on Mitsukejima, one of Noto’s most famous islands.
